Iteris Unveils Statewide 511 Traveler Information System in Virginia

In 1999, The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) requested the Federal Communications Commission (FCC (News - Alert)) to create a three-digit telephone number for traveler information all over U.S. This petition was supported by 17 State DOTs, 32 transit operators, and 23 Metropolitan Planning Organizations and local agencies. In 2000, the Federal Communications Commission allocated "511" as the single traffic information telephone number to be made available to states and local jurisdictions across the country.

Recently, Iteris launched one of the nation's highly advanced 511 Traveler Information Systems for the Commonwealth of Virginia. The company was given the contract to deploy this system by the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) under its Transportation Video & Data Services project, according to company officials.

According to the agreement, the company will work on Open Road Consulting, Skyline Network Engineering, and Global-5 Communications. Keeping up with the project's tight seven-month deadline to make sure the system will be in service before the busy summer travel season, Iteris (News - Alert) has provided the new 511 Traveler Information System on schedule and within budget.

“Iteris is proud to have been a part of this successful and innovative traveler information system," said Abbas Mohaddes president and CEO of Iteris. "As one of the largest developers and operators of public-sector traveler information systems we were confident in our ability to provide Virginia commuters with accurate and reliable traffic information and a system by which this data is readily accessible.”

Recently, the company partnered with INRIX, an international provider of traffic information and driver services, to combine INRIX's real-time and historical traffic information with Iteris' intelligent performance measurement and management software system, IterisPeMS.

IterisPeMS is now able to provide traffic data information with broader coverage across all major highways and arterial roads with INRIX's data. Also, providing a more reliable, real-time, traffic management solution with actionable information, IterisPeMS will have an enhanced ability to evaluate and process this data, officials said.
