What Does the Cloud Mean for Network Management Providers?

The Interop (News - Alert) 2012 show in Las Vegas, NV recently witnessed the gathering of some of the technology world’s most prominent figures to discuss the future of business technology and what roles cloud computing, virtualization, and video will play in the coming years.

During an interview between Joe Habib, director of Global Services for WildPackets, and Rich Tehrani (News - Alert), CEO of TMC, the two discussed what the notion of hosted services means for a company like WildPackets that supplies network performance management services.

Tehrani probed about the changes in cloud computing, and asked Habib how the proliferation of hosted services affects his business. Habib noted, “It changes what people are focused on. Typically we’re looking at an access distribution model internally and focusing on those types of network segments. Now they’re really looking at the WAN segment and understanding what the effect is of a cloud-based service.”

As a provider of network, application performance, protocol analysis, VoIP monitoring, and troubleshooting solutions, WildPackets (News - Alert) has been in the business of capturing protocol analysis and analyzing network traffic for quite some time.

WildPackets works on wired, wireless, VoIP, and distributed networks, according to Habib. “We provide a way of capturing packets at over 10 gigabytes per second,” he told Tehrani.

Software and hardware-based solutions enable WildPackets to reach a broad audience of potential customers, and Habib made mention of the fact that people are now considering more questions surrounding bandwidth quantity.

Now that the cloud-based options out there provide for different methods of accessing networks, the multiple access points necessarily complicate network management. But, luckily, that’s what WildPackets addresses best.
