'AMD Embedded R-Series APU' Platform Launched for Graphic-Intensive Applications

AMD (News - Alert) has launched the AMD Embedded R-Series APU platform that will see higher performance for multicore processing as well as advanced video and graphics capabilities. The platform will allow for parallel-processing and graphic-intensive applications to run on x86 machines more efficiently.

AMD pioneered the embedded APU to offer customers a high-performance, power-efficient, small form-factor embedded process, and the AMD Embedded R-Series takes the APU technology to the next level,” said Buddy Broeker, director of AMD Embedded Solutions.

Broeker said developers can now “leverage the integrated heterogeneous system architecture that offers high-performance parallel processing engine” for accelerated graphics-intensive applications using industry-standard libraries like OpenCL and DirectCompute.

The platform not only offers reduced power consumption and die space, but provides developers the flexibility of the same board design and software stack for different applications. Applications no longer need to have separate form factors for separate graphics processors or cards, making it highly scalable due to its ability to offer integrated dedicated and shared resources.

The AMD Embedded R-Series APU can also be used for remote management and client virtualization deployments, which save on costs while increasing security and reliability. The Trusted Platform Module is also supported to offer security capabilities to the platform.

AMD Embedded R-Series will help developers to build graphics-intensive embedded applications on hardware that combines a CPU and a GPU while providing software migration tools like OpenCL. A dedicated hardware video compression engine will help encode video quickly and efficiently for video applications like surveillance and video conferencing. GPU-assisted encryption and decryption will mean fewer resources will be used.

Up to 4 independent displays can be used to display video feeds, and a graphics card extension will offer support for up to 10 independent displays.

A number of companies including Kontron (News - Alert), Advantech-Innocore, Congatec and Quixant, among others, have already announced products that will incorporate the AMD Embedded R-Series APU platform to offer leading-edge technology in their markets.
