Micrium Announces Redesigned Tool, uC/Probe

Micrium, provider of software components for embedded systems, announced a redesigned version of the visualization tool uC/Probe, featuring an intuitive drag-and-drop interface for developers to create graphical representations of embedded systems.

uC/Probe is a useful tool in embedded systems design, allowing users to take charge of virtually any variable, memory location and I/O port in the embedded product, while the system is running. It also allows users to "see" real data gathered in a non-invasive manner, display any variables such as analog gauges, numeric indicators, thermometers, bar charts, pie charts and LEDs.

"All too often, the most powerful tools for embedded systems development are those that are also the most difficult to use," stated Jean Labrosse, founder and CEO of Micrium. "The new version of uC/Probe, however, makes vast quantities of helpful information available through just a few mouse clicks."

The concept of uC/Probe has attracted attention since the tool was first released five years ago. The product gives embedded software developers read and write access to their code's variables.

uC/Probe is usually compared to conventional debuggers, but its graphical capabilities make it more versatile. Developers can use it in the early stages of a project and can turn to the tool again after product deployment to troubleshoot devices in the field. The new version of uC/Probe, like its predecessors, is Windows-based.

uC/Probe eliminates the use of printf() statements, the need to include a user interface and the need to write code in embedded product. While it adds time, perspective and unprecedented control, users relish the ability to expand and customize the dashboard, work on one display and use the system on another, and apply it in teaching internal staff.
