Axis Communications' AXIS P13 and AXIS Q16 Series Network Cameras Earn UL Certification

Axis (News - Alert) Communications – a provider of network video solutions for professional installations – recently announced that its network cameras, namely AXIS P13 and AXIS Q16 Series products, are now UL Listed under the 60950 standard for IT equipment.

The UL stands for Underwriters Laboratories (News - Alert) Inc., which is an independent safety science company with five distinct business units, namely Product Safety, Environment, Life & Health, University and Verification Services. The UL supports safe-living and working environments through product testing and certification.

The key reason behind the UL listing of these products, AXIS P13 and AXIS Q16 Series, is that the municipal and regional requirements in the U.S. demand UL certification for cameras used in surveillance installations. If products are not UL Listed, a separate inspection is generally required.

IP-based surveillance cameras fall under National Electrical Code (NEC) sections similar to other IT equipment such as wireless access points and VoIP telephones. The NEC sections are applicable for Limited Power Source (News - Alert) (LPS) products, because they are powered from a central source via Power over Ethernet (PoE).

Generally, LPS products do not require a UL fire and safety listing because they qualify based on the certification of these respective power sources. However, the municipal and regional requirements in the U.S. demand UL certification.

As a result, Axis Communications got its AXIS P13 and AXIS Q16 Series products certified with UL. The Network Cameras that have been officially UL Listed include the indoor and outdoor-ready (-E) versions of AXIS P1343/P1344/P1346/P1347 and AXIS Q1602/Q1604.

“While LPS devices like IP cameras typically do not require a UL listing, there were times when our integrator partners' projects were delayed because local jurisdiction required non-UL Listed product inspection,” said Fredrik Nilsson, general manager, Axis Communications, Inc., in a statement. “To eliminate the cost and complexity of these inspections for our partners, we'll continue to work very closely with UL's fire and safety organization to ensure all our video products are UL Listed.”

As the company's first network cameras to be UL certified, the AXIS P13 Network Camera Series comprises of indoor and outdoor-ready fixed cameras that deliver very high image quality with H.264 compression and are ideal for high-performance surveillance. In addition, these cameras feature P-Iris control and digital PTZ and multi-view streaming.

The AXIS Q16 Network Camera Series consists of indoor and outdoor-ready fixed cameras that deliver very high image quality in demanding video surveillance conditions, such as poor light or highly variable lighting, for the reason that these cameras have been built on Lightfinder technology. These cameras also feature Wide Dynamic Range with dynamic capture.

All the other IP cameras in the Axis portfolio will be UL Listed throughout 2012, joining the company's encoder, Power over Ethernet (PoE) midspan, PoE splitter and power source portfolios, which also hold UL certifications.

The 60950 standard, under which AXIS P13 and AXIS Q16 Series products that have been UL Listed, is applicable to mains-powered (AC outlet) or battery-powered IT equipment and references more than 70 other UL standards.
