ClariPhy Communications Licenses Tensilica's DPU

ClariPhy Communications Inc. a company that has been trying to raise money, make its technology run faster, and handle a new CEO, has announced it will be licensing Tensilica’s (News - Alert) Xtensa dataplane processor unit (DPU).

Back in 2010, ClariPhy Communications, a chip company, announced that it needed to raise funds to help keep up with the growth of Internet traffic. The company, which had been working on optical networking chips for more than six years, had a brand-new chip ready that could bring network speeds as high as 100 gigabits per second. In order to release the chip, the company had to raise more than $24 million in funding.

The funding was necessary because the company believed network traffic was going to grow by 40 percent by 2015. As the company continued to develop its technology, in 2011 it announced that it was ready to begin manufacturing the chip, but in order to do so, the company needed a new leader, Nariman Yousefi. Yousefi’s jobs were to oversee the Broadcom’s (News - Alert) networking division from the beginning and help make the company a force in the chip industry.

Yousefi’s ideas must be working, because less than a year after taking on the CEO title, ClariPhy Communications has a new partnership with Tensilica to take its DPU technology and enable more sophisticated embedded control for applications.

“We benchmarked other CPU and controller cores and selected Tensilica’s Xtensa DPU because it offered us a unique combination of a robust standard architecture with a rich third party ecosystem, plus the ability to configure and extend the core to meet our exact applications need,” said Reza Norouzian, Vice President of Sales and Business Development at ClariPhy. “With Tensilica, we are able to leverage the reuse advantages while still reaping the benefits of differentiation arising from customization of the core.”

Tensilica’s Vice President of Marketing and Business Development, Steve Roddy, said Tensilica is proud to be working with a company that has paved the way in the form of efficient technology. “ClariPhy is aggressively pushing both high-performance and high-integration in optical networking infrastructure applications,” said Roddy. “As they strive for maximum performance at the lowest possible power, our automated processor core customization technology will help them reach their design goals.”

ClariPhy Communication has two goals: increase Internet speeds and capacity, while decreasing costs to the consumer. The new relationship between ClariPhy and Tensilica looks to do just that.
