By NatheshThe Comverse (News - Alert) Service Enablement Middleware (SEM) is a service orchestration software layer that allows operators to take advantage of a whole new world of mid-tail applications and UI developments. The newly released Comverse VAS 3.0 Service Enablement Middleware is capable of helping CSPs generate new revenue streams – a feature that was previously not available. It is also optimized to make feature phones smarter.
Though there is an increase in usage of smartphones because of their powerful OS and web browsing capabilities, a majority of users still make use of basic feature phones as they are less expensive and easy to use. Service providers can hope to tap into this vast market segment and realize newer revenue opportunities by extending the capabilities of lower-end handsets and enhancing end-user experience.
The VAS 3.0 SEM is tweaked with new characteristics that offer CSPs openness and innovation while also letting them control and monetize their existing assets. By acting as a connection between IP and legacy systems, the VAS 3.0 helps CSPs deliver new services to their entire subscriber base and VAS’ cloud-ready architecture offers better flexibility and control, and smart cost-effective opportunities.
“SEM is a game changer, making feature phones ‘smarter’ and much easier to work with by enabling applications to be network-based instead of device-based. SEM leverages valuable assets and information unique to the network, such as device capabilities and location, to open new mass-market possibilities for the feature phone segment in high-relevance fields ranging from mobile health and mobile money to mobile ticketing for events and transportation, promotions and advertising – and beyond,” said Oz Ovady, senior vice president of Value-Added Services and General Manager at Comverse, in a press release.
Comverse added that by reducing developer barriers, its open standards-based middleware can elevate operators to be more relevant in the consumer and enterprise application markets, monetizing their telco-grade infrastructure and unparalleled connectivity to a large subscriber base over multiple touchpoints.
