Clustrix New SQL: A Compelling Alternative to MySQL?

No more sharding or re-writes of applications, no more constraints to database capacity, no more downtime - this was the message that Clustrix (News - Alert) sent when it announced that it had helped Massive Media build a social networking site, being used by more than four million users, in just six months.

“Pre-Clustrix, we spent a lot of time on optimizing for performance and scale. Now we can spend those resources better,” said Lorenz Bogaert, co-founder and CEO of Massive Media, in a press release.

Clustrix also announced the the availability of its Development Kit, available as a free trial. The kit simulates the hardware components of the Clustrix database appliance and thus allows users to get the actual feel of the scaled distributed relational database system.

The Development Kit is expected to benefit developers and database professionals who need a better and more cost-effective way to scale their databases. They can explore functionality, develop apps and ensure compatibility of the Clustrix solution with their existing big-data environments.

Clustrix re-invented the relational database from the ground up and the NewSQL database solution enables users to install and scale their databases within minutes.

“Massive Media is a great example of the radical simplicity and scalability of our NewSQL database solution that entirely eliminates the need for sharding,” said Robin Purohit, president and CEO of Clustrix.

Commenting on the Clustrix solution, Matt Aslett, research manager, data management and analytics at 451 Research, said, “Clustrix's combination of an SSD-based appliance and MySQL compatibility is a compelling alternative for enterprises struggling to manage with sharding MySQL.”

Clustrix is also growing by expanding its customer base and bringing aboard new veterans to join its executive team

In other news, Clustrix recently announced that it has been selected as a winner of the Red Herring (News - Alert) Global 100 award, honoring leading private companies from North America, Europe, and Asia.

Red Herring's editorial staff evaluated the companies on both quantitative and qualitative criteria, such as financial performance, technology innovation, management quality, strategy, and market penetration.

This assessment of potential was complemented by a review of the track record and standing of startups relative to their sector peers.
