Trimble Yuma Tablet with GNU/Linux Now Available from SDG Systems

SDG Systems, LLC recently announced the availability of the Trimble (News - Alert) Yuma rugged tablet computer which functions on GNU/Linux operating system. With Linux on Yuma, it now has the ability to ensure mobile use of geospatial applications such as GRASS or Quantum (News - Alert) GIS. Besides these abilities, it will also have several other standard or custom Linux-based applications.  Also included are industry-standard DB-9 serial and USB host ports which will allow for a very easy way to connect to the field or factory equipment.

In a release, Todd Blumer, president of SDG Systems said, “Our customers have told us that they need a rugged, military-grade, tablet computer running Linux. We are pleased to provide that option for them. The water- and dust-proof rating, MIL-STD-810F testing and solid-state drive ensures that users will receive a durable Linux product that can be used in harsh conditions. With optional accessories like a vehicle docking station, the Yuma is ready to meet the field data collection or inspection needs.”

The Yuma tablet computer that comes from the Trimble has a 1.6 GHz Intel (News - Alert) Atom processor and features a 7-inch sunlight-readable touchscreen display which comes with a magnesium alloy shell. It has been drop-tested for durability and also comes with Wi-Fi, Bluetooth technology as well as a dual camera system. It handles GPS, 32 or 80 GB SSD and has an IP67 rating. The ability to expand on capacity is provided with SDIO (SDHC) and ExpressCard slots.

Available right now is the Yuma with Ubuntu (News - Alert) 10.04 LTS Netbook Edition. For a minimum purchase agreement or engineering fee, users can put in a request to avail different Linux distributions that are suitable to their needs.

In other news, SDG Systems, providing the mobile workforce with rugged, reliable, and dependable products, has announced AT&T (News - Alert) certification for the Bluebird Pidion BIP-6000Max, which is a fully-loaded rugged mobile computer featuring data collection interfaces which include the 1D laser, 1D/2D imager and RFID.
