ITEXPO Panelists Preview Upcoming Session with TMCnet

The countdown has officially reached single digits and in just five days thousands of individuals will flock to warm Miami, Fla., for ITEXPO East 2012, the largest communications conference in the world taking place from Jan. 31 to Feb. 3.

While the exhibit floor might not open until Wednesday, Feb. 1, some of the leading industry experts are taking the mic for a special session titled, “Post POTS Net Neutrality & the Cloud: From POTS to PANS.” Taking place at 2 p.m. EST Tuesday, Jan. 31, the discussion will center upon whether POTS is really dead and how the Internet has become the “connecting glue” for the public to share thoughts socially and privately.

“We will talk about the impact of the cloud and the migration from end to end to any to any services; about supporting access and quality of service; and about net neutrality and privacy,” Chris Celeberti, CEO of Clever Spoke and session moderator, told TMCnet. “We will ask what is the right framework for the future of communication. We need to focus on the future and provide knowledge how we get there not where we have been.”

“The session will provide participants with not only the road map for the future of communications but the challenges associated with change,” he added.

Since many individuals agree that it is time to kill the regulatory rules of POTS and move people to the next generation of the Internet, the session will focus on Public Access Neutral Solutions (PANS), according to session leaders.

Serving on the panel will be Carl Ford, partner and community developer at Crossfire Media, Jiri Kuthan (News - Alert), CTO at IPTEL, and Richard Shockey, chairman of SIP Forum.

According to Ford, one of the most important points that he will bring up during the session is the fact that the Internet has a different model than the POTS.

“Where before the issue was connecting end points the goal now is to ensure that all end points can meet on the Internet,” he told TMCnet. “This has different implications in terms of how people should view the potential for monopolistic power and net neutrality. Too often, people look for a smoking gun on access, where the controlling power can be in the gathering in the cloud.”

“Secondly, the goal is to talk about communication overall the change is from connections to sessions, but the sessions are like those of the servers not of the people,” he added. “We no longer talk in real time. We expect an element of delay today.”

When asked how the cloud will impact PANS, Ford said, “As my friends from Google (News - Alert) say, ‘There is no cloud, it’s just the Internet.’ The real story is that as we view by sharing rather than share by talking we are comfortable with the timing of texting, the delay of video. From a services standpoint we expect things to always be available.”

“The cloud is supposed to be always available,” he added. “The battle over SOPA/PIPA etc., has now a visible case in the DOJ vs. MegaUpload. Those of us who rely on the cloud legitimately have to ask why the government has assumed guilt on all the accounts it has shut down. The protection of the individual which everyone talks about as the concern for net neutrality access seems to be lost in translation when it comes to accounts on the cloud.”

For Shockey, he is looking forward to honing in the fact during the session that it’s not a matter of if we will see the demise of pots, it’s a question of when.

“But when is when,” he asked TMCnet. “You can’t go to eBay (News - Alert) for DMS 5ESS parts forever. There are still a lot of technical issues to resolve, especially in IP Number Translation and Interconnection Discovery. So what is really going to go on the wire?”
