Likewise Promotes Open Source Expert Gerald Carter as CTO

Likewise, a software platform provider for identity, security and storage, recently announced a reshuffle in the top tier of the company management.

In a press release, the company announced that open source advocate Gerald (Jerry) Carter will be promoted the position of chief technology officer. Carter is stepping into the shoes of retiring CTO Manny Vellon, who will continue to be associated with the company as a Likewise Technical Fellow. The appointment is effective immediately, the company mentioned in the release.

Likewise Storage Services claim to provide industrial-strength client-side and server-side CIFS with SMB and SMB2 support as well as NFS v3 support so Microsoft (News - Alert) Windows, Linux and Unix clients can access folders and files over a network. The Likewise Storage Services FUSE module has been designed to allow users to mount remote Windows shares on a Linux computer to access folders and files. Users can remotely manage Likewise Storage Services File Server on Linux and Unix machines by using popular Microsoft Windows tools, the company said in the release.

The author of the widely acclaimed “LDAP System Administration” and the third edition of “Using Samba”, Carter is a known face in the open source community with his varied contributions. He has been developing, writing about, and teaching on open source since the late '90s at events such as LISA, LinuxWorld Expo, SANE, SambaXP, OSCON, and the SNIA SDC. He was a member of the Samba core development team from 1998-2009.

“Jerry has been such a vocal advocate of the open source community and a driving force of the great differentiation of Likewise technology - an open source, not just free product,” CEO of Likewise Barry Crist noted in a statement.

“I’ve been so proud of this company’s work enabling cross-platform integration and authentication. The future in bringing all that expertise into the green field of storage is awe-inspiring and I’m thrilled to be leading the charge,” Carter said in a statement.

Last month, Centrify Corp., a provider of security and compliance solutions that centrally control, secure and audit cross-platform systems and applications using Active Directory, announced a new program for organizations interested in replacing their existing Likewise Software products.
