Mobius Launches mobiPET, a Visual Image Recognition Service to Find Lost Pets

Mobius has announced the launch of a new image recognition service designed for pets called mobiPET. The new offering from Mobius has been developed as a mobile phone-based service which can help reunite lost pets and owners.

The mobiPET collar tags and lost pet alert notification service will be provided for free at popular pet stores, veterinary clinics, and animal shelters.

According to a May 2011 Harris Poll, close to 62 percent of Americans own a pet. The mobiPET service is easy to use as the pet owner is required to only take a picture of the mobiPET collar tag (News - Alert) through any camera-enabled mobile phone. Once the picture is taken, the owner simply sends it to mobiPET. In response, mobiPET sends a request for the photo of the pet and directs the pet owner to a mobile internet page. At this page, the pet owner is required to fill in the relevant contact info, the pet’s name, and information on any medication given to the pet, in addition to the likes and dislikes of the pet. Once the information has been fed into the system, it is automatically linked to the relevant and corresponding mobile phone number employed in the activation of the mobiPET tag.

“Unlike RFID or other implant chips, mobiPET is non-invasive and requires no special equipment, such as RFID chip readers or scanners,” said Mobius CEO, Aram Kovach.

mobiPET has been developed to function across all mobile phone service carriers as long as the mobile phone has a camera, with text messaging capability. It has also been fitted with a reverse lookup feature which links information with the owners’ home phone number.

If a pet is lost or goes missing, the owner sends the text message “LOST” to mobiPET using the same mobile phone number which was initially used during the registration and activation of the mobiPET tag. On receiving the alert, mobiPET sends an instant message alert and photo of the pet to other mobiPET members functioning within a ten-mile radius of the owner’s current location, effectively galvanizing a community of mobiPET owner-members who join forces to locate the missing pet. In addition, local member veterinarians and animal shelters are also notified of the missing pet.

The finder of the missing pet then notifies the owner by taking a photo of the collar tag and forwarding it to MobiPET which instantly notifies the owner and provides the finders contact information.
