LexisNexis Launches Open Source Platform Called HPCC Systems

HPCC Systems is an open source model that is made for solving big data problems in the enterprise. Built along high performing technologies in computing, HPCC Systems has a proven record of success in the last decade. HPCC Systems is essentially a dual license open source model offered by LexisNexis (News - Alert) in its data intensive supercomputing platform. An alternative to Hadoop, HPCC Systems or high performance computing cluster technology, which is what it works on, is a single architecture and data centric, consistent programming language.

In a release, the Chief Executive Officer of LexisNexis Risk Solutions, James M. Peck said that “We feel the time is right to offer our HPCC technology platform as a dual license, open source solution. We believe that HPCC Systems will take big data computing to the next level. We’ve been doing this quietly for years for our customers with great success. We are now excited to present it to the community to spur greater adoption. We look forward to leveraging the innovation of the open source community to further the development of the platform for the benefit of our customers and the community.”

A virtual machine will first be released to the community in order to perform testing, along with training and documentation. After a few weeks, the full binaries will come out, followed by the source code a few weeks later. The data intensive supercomputer from LexisNexis has, for ten years, proven efficient sorting large quantities of data. The HPCC technology is used by banks, utilities, federal government, insurance companies and law enforcement agencies.

The vice president and research director at Gartner (News - Alert), Mark Driver said that “In the next few years, open source solutions will be leveraged in increasingly mission-critical deployments. In addition, we will start to see a trend where more and more companies open source some of their proprietary intellectual property (IP) in efforts to accelerate development of their technology platforms and applications. For companies that own their IP and move to an open source model, properly managed open-source assets drive positive return on investment through flexibility, innovation and cost optimization. These three work in confluence to increase value, strengthen competitive opportunities and reduce costs.”
