PathScale Announces EKOPath 4 Compiler Suite as an Open Source Project

PathScale, a provider of high-performance Fortran, C and C++ compiler products for AMD64, Intel (News - Alert) 64, MIPS processors, announced the availability of EKOPath 4 Compiler Suite as an open source project.

According to PathScale, the EKOPath Compiler Suite provides a rich set of tools to programmers. It features a sophisticated optimization infrastructure to maximize program performance on any Intel 64 or AMD64 platform supporting Intel MMX, SSE, SSE2, SSE3, SSSE3, SSE4.1, SSE4.2, AMD SSE4A and AVX (News - Alert) processors.

Now available as a free download for Linux, FreeBSD and Solaris, the new EKOPath 4 Compiler Suite is compatible with GNU/gcc toolchain and major third party debuggers.

PathScale (News - Alert) EKOPath 4 is the latest version and features new C++ backend and GNU compatible runtime, optimized exception handling, optimized C and C++ debugging support, more Fortran 2003 features, improved IPA (inter-procedural analysis), new PathAS assembler, complete implementation of C++ STL locale library, and more.

Apart from the complete development stack, such as compiler, debugger, assembler, runtimes and standard libraries, the EKOPath 4 also includes documentation. The latest release also includes PathDB, an advanced debugger debugger that is not encumbered by the GPLv3.

Currently, PathDB has been released under a permissive license. It has been overhauled to provide better support for multithreaded applications, library based design and will continue to see enhancements around robustness, performance, better language integration for C++/Fortran, scalability for clustered environments, DWARF4 support and compatibility with GDB, said officials with PathScale in a statement.

According to PathScale, EKOPath is the product of years of ongoing development and represents one of the industry’s highest performance Intel 64 and AMD (News - Alert) C, C++ and Fortran compilers.

“This is an exciting announcement because it allows PathScale's world-class compilers to be accessible to a much larger community of compiler users.  The enlarged user base will benefit PathScale, and in turn promote more community participation in the continued development of PathScale's products,” said Fred Chow, chief scientist at PathScale, in a statement.

C. Bergstrom, CTO, PathScale, said in a press release, “For the past 2 years PathScale has engaged more and more in the open source community and this marks a turning point with a full commitment, our core product the EKOPath 4 Compiler Suite going open source.”

According to PathScale, it will continue to provide full paid support for EKOPath as well as additional support options for AMD's Open64 compiler. The company is aiming to make the suite available to anyone as a free download with an intention to bring a community of users, developers and researchers together.
