OPEL Announces Validation of a Critical Element of POET Semiconductor Platform by BAE Systems

OPEL Defense Integrated Systems (ODIS) announced that BAE Systems (News - Alert) Electronic Solutions has validated an important element of the Planar Optoelectronic Technology (POET) semiconductor platform developed by ODIS, the wholly owned U.S. affiliate of OPEL Solar International.

The validation resulted into successful fabrication of operational transistor devices. OPEL is exploring an accelerated technical and commercialization roadmap. The company will be addressing future arrangements with device manufacturers, where its platform could be optimized to address device applications based on POET’s disruptive technology.

ODIS customers can gain immensely as POET enables monolithic fabrication of integrated circuit gallium arsenide devices containing both electronic and optical elements on a single wafer, company officials said.

The main brain behind POET is chief scientist Geoff Taylor and his ODIS team. POET is protected by several patents. POET provides devices with significantly lower costs, increased speed, density, and reliability, POET could potentially impact a broad range of mobile and server applications.

“We are thrilled that a company with the technical stature of BAE Systems has validated key elements of the outstanding work done by Taylor and his team,” said Leon M. Pierhal, CEO of OPEL, in a statement.

“With this first independently-manufactured transistor, we have achieved a milestone to the industry’s long-held vision of monolithically fusing photonics and electronics,” Pierhal added.

In the last three years, BAE Systems engineers tested and confirmed critical electrical elements of POET sub-process steps for the transistors. In the near future, these electrical structures will be integrated with the required optical structures.

Recently, OPEL Solar International announced it has been selected a member of the “2011 TSX Venture 50,” a ranking of strong performing companies listed on TSX Venture Exchange. The 2011 TSX Venture 50 is comprised of ten companies from each of five sectors: Clean Technology, Mining, Oil & Gas, Diversified Industries, and Technology & Life Sciences.
