Portugal Telecom Expands Use of Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Provider of open source solutions Red Hat has announced that Portugal Telecom (News - Alert) has expanded its use of Red Hat Enterprise Linux as it moves toward an open source and open standards infrastructure.

Portugal Telecom is a global telecommunications operator that offers multimedia services to developing international markets. “Portugal Telecom is a global organization that relies on technology for the delivery of end-user products and services,” said Mário Vian Costa, IT manager at Portugal Telecom.

The company recognizes the benefits of Red Hat technology, and has expanded its use of Red Hat (News - Alert) Enterprise Linux. Company officials said that this will benefit the company thanks to innovations in open source technology.

Using Red Hat Enterprise Linux, the company also plans to leverage the platform’s comprehensive certification and support across its robust ecosystem of certified hardware and software platforms.

“Having relied upon Red Hat for many years across our complex and demanding technology infrastructure, it was clear that we could work together more extensively to offer the quality of service that our customers need,” Costa said, adding that by extending the subscription with Red Hat, they now have continued access to valuable enterprise-class support and consulting from the experts.

Additionally, the agreement with Red Hat is also expected to enable Portugal Telecom's wider use of Linux, with the added advantage of being able to leverage reliable support provided by Red Hat.

Earlier this month, NTT Communications, one of the largest telecommunications companies in the world, announced the expansion of its use of Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization and Red Hat Enterprise Linux as the foundation of its cloud computing and hosting service offering, Biz Hosting Basic.
