Petroleum Pipe Company Picks Talari's Adaptive Private Networking Appliances

Petroleum Pipe Company (PPC), an international distributor of casing, tubing and line pipes to the world’s oil companies, has deployed Talari’s adaptive private networking (APN) appliances.

By deploying Talari’s APN appliances, PPC expects to ensure high-availability networks in its sites around the globe, including in developing world regions where broadband may be inconsistent or unavailable.

After a comprehensive vendor evaluation, the company selected Talari Networks’ (News - Alert) WAN Virtualization to support the PPC WAN infrastructure.

Chris Starling, IT manager at PPC, said that the other solutions were literally two broadband connections plugged in. “You didn’t get much control over what comes out at the other end. There was very little in the way of management.”

In contrast, Talari’s Mercury appliances are “easy to configure, install and swap out” when needed, Starling (News - Alert) said.

Using WAN Virtualization, Talari’s APN appliances aggregates two or more leased lines  – such as Internet or wireless connections – continuously monitoring performance of every network path between the remote sites and PPC’s U.K. based datacenter, ensuring a more reliable and predictable data and VoIP network.

With Talari’s APN technology, the company can measure loss, latency and jitter, detecting and responding sub-second to network traffic congestion. The company’s appliances make real-time traffic engineering decisions on a packet-by-packet basis, which is especially critical for latency sensitive applications like VoIP and video.

One of PPC’s primary applications is VoIP. WAN Virtualization ensures that VoIP packets are given priority over other types, such as email or file transfers. In addition, it also ensures that they are always transmitted over the path with the lowest loss and jitter characteristics. Moreover, Talari’s APN appliances work with wireless networks such as WiMAX (News - Alert) in areas where land lines aren’t available.

PPC has deployed seven Talari Mercury APN appliances: one in London, two in Dubai, and the remainder at smaller remote offices. The company plans to deploy more APN appliances in 2011, including several in Africa.

Last month, Talari Networks announced that its appliance-based WAN Virtualization solutions are compliant with key Internet protocol (IP) telephony solutions from Avaya (News - Alert).
