Tiny MEMS Bring Large Value Proposition to Many Devices

Micro-electromechanical Systems or MEMS is a small chip device that helps in the integration of sensors, actuators and electronics. Its ubiquity has got to be seen to be believed. MEMS are used in the automotive, industrial, medical industry and are even found in CE devices, smartphones, e-readers, laptops and more.

According to ABI Research, this miniaturized technology is set to propel itself into limelight with newer uses being found every day. Research forecasts indicate strong growth during the next five years with almost five billion MEMS forecast to be shipped during 2016.

Within the high-value MEMS market, industrial applications were likely to dominate while medical electronics and others would follow closely behind. In any given CE device, there is usually more than one MEMS present. New forms of display that use less power in comparison to the current screen technologies override the initial greater cost factor.

In a press release, practice director Peter Cooney noted that although initially smartphones would provide the greatest boost to uptake, OEMS may yet deliver the strongest growth in revenue over time, if they embraced MEMS. The prospects for the CE devices market were very bright.

Cooney spoke about the untapped potential of the MEMS market and in spite of it being dominated by a couple of large vendors, who diversified their product offerings, there was still room for new vendors with new products. Although competition in the MEMS market would result in falling ASPs, The MEMS market would eventually split between seven specialized vendors and several small ones.

ABI Research’s (News - Alert) “ MEMS in Smartphones and Consumer Electronics analyzes the market opportunity for all of the consumer devices mentioned above in terms of unit volumes, revenues and average selling prices, with forecasts to 2016.
