By Jai C.S.Project Bossanova, a project initiated by Ohso specifically to launch the first-ever 3D game exclusively for Linux, has come out with a new competition aimed at game developers.
To carry out with the competition, Project Bossanova is said to have teamed up with Desura, a digital distribution service for gamers and the company behind both ModDB and IndieDB, to help spread the word.
Desura believes that it can benefit from the partnership in the future, as well. After two weeks, the project will select three of the top submissions and allow their audience to vote on which one they’d like to see be the project sponsor.
"Linux users and gamers may be a minority, but they certainly are the most vocal and passionate, which the humble indie bundle has demonstrated twice now," Scott Reismanis, founder of Desura, said in a statement.
All game development teams and companies can submit their game as an entry to the contest directly to www.projectbossanova.com. However, submitters must commit to making the game available for Linux only, profit sharing with the project, and will also be encouraged to publish the game’s code under an OSI-approved license.
"Having an original, exclusive Linux game champion the platform is a step in the right direction, and an exciting possibility for us as we work towards bringing our digital distribution client to Linux as well," Reismanis added.
Founded in July 2010 by Joe Sneddon and Benjamin Humphrey, two tech-savvy entrepreneurs, Ohso has been creating and implementing ideas, capitalizing on the emerging free software market. The company runs and develops numerous Web blogs and creates applications and games mainly revolving around the Ubuntu platform. Ubuntu (News - Alert) is noted as a secure, intuitive operating system that powers desktops, servers, netbooks and laptops.
Ubuntu Gamer is part of the Ohso network of sites and its aim is to deliver high-quality content related to gaming on Ubuntu, and more widely, Linux.
"We’re very excited to work with Desura in this joint venture as they have established themselves as the name in independent gaming," Benjamin Humphrey, Project Bossanova Team leader and editor-in-chief of Ubuntu news site OMG! Ubuntu!, said in a statement.
OMG! Ubuntu! is an Ubuntu blog launched in August of 2009 aimed at everyday Ubuntu users covering the latest developments, application updates and theme releases alongside opinion pieces, interviews, polls and more.
"As we have stated before, this is an ambitious project, but with the Desura partnership in place, we feel that we are one step closer to achieving our goal," Humphrey added.
