Impinj Achieves Top Ranking in ABI Research Vendor Matrix

ABI Research, a research firm that offers comprehensive analysis, and quantitative forecasting of trends in global connectivity and other emerging technologies, has ranked Impinj, Inc., a provider of UHF Gen 2 RFID solutions at the top in its latest Vendor Matrix, which is an analytical tool that provides a clear understanding of vendors’ positions in specific markets. The firm had been established in the year 1990, and deploys a worldwide team of experts through its offices located in North America, Europe and Asia, to offer advice to thousands of decision makers through 29 research and advisory services.

Named ‘Passive UHF (ISO 18000-6C/Gen 2) RFID Transponder IC Vendor Matrix,’ the new study is a part of ABI Research’s (News - Alert) RFID Research Service; and evaluates the vendors on the basis of a number of factors including ‘innovation’ and ‘implementation’ across several criteria. Within the same vendor matrix, Alien Technology and NXP Semiconductor have been ranked at second and third spots respectively.

Leveraging its technical expertise and industry partnerships, Impinj develops an extensive portfolio of products and solutions that include high-performance tag (News - Alert) chips, readers, reader chips, software, antennas and systems integration; and are useful in a range of applications across numerous vertical markets such as apparel, inventory management, asset tracking, authentication and serialization.

“Backed by its flagship Monza 3 offering and 2010 launch of Monza 4, continued product development, IC manufacturing capacity expansion, on-going IC cost and size reduction efforts, plus the majority share position of UHF RFID tag chips sold in 2010, Impinj secured the top spot,” commented Michael Liard, director at ABI Research. “A solid market position, in-progress cost-reduction efforts and proven success in configurable, feature-focused passive UHF tag application markets where Higgs-3 ICs are utilized, help bolster Alien’s scores and placement. Meanwhile NXP has renewed its emphasis on the passive UHF IC market over the last few years, and also received strong scores in all Innovation and Implementation criteria.”

In July 2010, Impinj announced the introduction of the Indy R500 reader chip that had been developed to meet the needs of an emerging market for low-cost hand-held, desktop and embedded RFID readers. The R500 enables UHF Gen 2 readers which are based on the industry-standard Indy architecture, and ensures optimized quality, reliability and performance.
