Viral Videos of Value Stem from Scientists and Engineers

Sometimes, the videos that go viral on YouTube (News - Alert) are astoundingly idiotic and annoying, but sometimes they are actually worthy of spending three minutes of your life to watch. When The Annoying Orange went viral with over 47 million views, I wanted to bang my head against a wall. When this tragically misled young person started screaming and crying about Britney Spears, I wanted to leave the Internet forever. But two recent parodies of pop songs have caught the online world’s attention, and they are actually entertaining.

YouTube is littered with parodies of famous music, TV shows, and clips that usually poke fun at the original artist or actor, yet the creators of these two specific musical parodies actually end up poking fun at themselves. One is a spoof of Lady Gaga’s ‘Bad Romance’ hit done by scientists in a lab known as The Zheng Lab singing about a “bad project.” The video is actually well done, costumes and all, with inventive lyrics, and has garnered almost 1 million views in one week.

The other is a play on Travie McCoy’s ‘Billionaire’ song with an engineer rapping about how nerdy he is, but how he will eventually rule the world. “I wanna be an engineer so freakin’ bad…” is truly catchy, and the kid isn’t bad at rapping either. Hey, engineers can be funny too...

In the world of online parodies, the Epic Meal Time videos are a mixture of humor and culinary ingenuity that poke fun at serious online cooking shows. The series is collecting a following; The Breakfast of Booze video, a favorite of the TMC (News - Alert) Editors, now has over 2 million hits:
