AVX Offers Enhanced Capacitor Arrays to Improve System Performance

AVX Corporation, a provider of electronic passive components and interconnect solutions including capacitors, resistors, filters, timing and circuit protection devices and connectors, has launched enhanced capacitor arrays that are helpful in reducing the size of circuit foot print, enhancing electromagnetic interference (EMI) performance and improving overall manufacturing speed. The company offers a number of multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) arrays comprising of two-element arrays in 0405 and 0508 packages and four-element arrays in 0508 and 0612 packages. Capacitance values of these arrays range from 1pf to 2.2uf and voltages of 6.3V to 100V.

“AVX (News - Alert) offers the widest selection of MLCC capacitors in the industry. AVX’s capacitor arrays are increasingly being chosen by designers to reduce circuit size and cost, while improving system level performance,” commented Tim Piver, product manager at AVX Corporation. “For example, when crystals are cut their frequency is specified by the manufacturer with a certain load capacitance. End users must add, or load that capacitance to their circuit to insure similar frequency characteristics. AVX’s miniature 0405 capacitor arrays are ideal for loading crystals. The circuit’s size and assembly time is minimized. The dual capacitors within the same package experience similar aging, noise, temperature effects and voltage coefficients.”

The MLCC arrays offered by the company are being deployed in switched capacitor voltage doubling inverter designs, and the components offer a number of advantages over inductor based circuits; which include reduced footprint, enhanced performance and improved EMI emissions and manufacturing speed. The CMOS-based circuits can be operated at relatively lower current at around 150uA, and offer an operating efficiency of more than 90 percent with most loads.

Available in SO8 and miniature SO8 packages, the switched capacitor voltage doubling inverters need the IC and three periphery capacitors within a completed circuit, and the AVX capacitor arrays reduce the size of the periphery capacitors in a voltage doubler up to a great extent. The circuit can be helpful in a number of applications, such as LCD contrast biasing, GaAs power amplifiers, interface power supplies, PDA or notebooks and hand held electronics.

In July 2010, Digi-Key honored AVX Corporation with the 2010 Exceptional Sales Performance Award as an acknowledgement toward its increased sales and exemplary business interactions. Chris Beeson, vice president of the volume business division at Digi-Key, presented the award to Pete Venuto, vice president of sales at AVX Corporation.
