Electronic component and battery manufacturer, FDK Corporation, extended its DK Series of non-isolated, point-of-load (POL) dc-dc converters with the addition of three new converters that operate from a 3.0Vdc to 5.5Vdc input bus.
“These additions to the DK Series provide attractive and cost-effective single component power solutions for systems designers facing increasingly tighter constraints on both board space and available height,” said Dr. Apurba Roy, executive advisor of FDK Corporation. “FDK will continue to expand this innovative segment of its dc-dc converter product line.”
These very small, low profile single-in-line package (SIP) devices deliver up to 3, 4, and 6 Amperes (A) of output current with efficiencies up to 94 percent. They provide a tightly regulated programmable output voltage in the range of 0.8Vdc to 3.465Vdc.
The 3A and 4A models deliver the full rated output current with no derating in ambient temperatures up to 85 and 75 degrees Celsius respectively under natural convection. The 6A converter delivers the full rated output current with no derating up to 60 degrees Celsius with 400LFM (2m/s) airflow.
FDK's 3A model FPDK05TR8003PSV and the 4A model FPDK05TR8004PSV are offered in a 0.394-inch wide x 0.185-inch deep (10.0 x 4.7mm) SIP package. The 6A model FPDK05TR8006PSV is offered in a 0.394-inch wide x 0.220-inch deep (10.0 x 5.6mm) SIP package. Occupying a footprint of less than 0.08 in2 (0.5cm2) for the 3A and 4A models, and 0.09 in2 (0.6cm2) for the 6A model, they provide significant space savings over discrete on-board solutions. All models have a low height of 0.472 inches (12.0mm), making them particularly suitable for high density racks, blade systems, and low profile consumer applications with limited board-to-board and board-to-case clearances.
The DK Series converters provide complete power conversion solutions without the need for external input and output capacitors. They are true single input converters in that they do not require an external Vcc (bias) supply for operation. They feature programmable output voltage, remote ON (News - Alert)/OFF, over-current and over-temperature protection, and start up into a pre-biased output. They fit a wide range of telecommunications, data communications, computing, industrial, and consumer applications where board space, cost, profile, efficiency, and reliable operation in elevated temperature environments are critical.
