Expand Networks Launches New Operating System with Visibility and Control Capabilities

Expand Networks, a service provider in optimizing WANs (Wireless Area Networks), recently launched an operating system which possesses an automatic Layer 7 QoS (Quality of Service) engine. This engine offers good visibility and control levels, providing a single, integrated WAN Optimization Platform, and a Firewall Transparency Mode (FTM) to enable security-friendly optimized WANs, faultless in all environments.

“The Layer 7 QoS engine delivers better visibility and control over applications on the WAN and as a result has improved optimization, as well as network ROI (Return on Investment). In addition, the Firewall Transparency Mode simplified installation by allowing us to optimize traffic across the MPLS WAN and VPN over Internet in UDP (News - Alert) flows,” said Frederic Facon, technical research architect, Roquette Group, a provider of starch and its derivatives.

The chief elements of Expand’s QoS are that the system is application-aware and is capable of auto-recognizing nearly 400 applications, peer to peer traffic and Instant Messaging applications. It is also possible to get integrated appliances interacting with WAN Optimization technology. The system also offers visibility into application types and enables prioritizing revenue generating applications, controlling secondary applications and restricting rogue applications. Users will also be able to control additional virtual bandwidth delivered by WAN Optimization to provide ROI on the existing infrastructure.

“WAN Optimization delivers improved application response times and network capacity, but if that extra capacity is not being controlled it can cause bad traffic to be optimized with a detrimental effect on the performance of the organization’s most important applications. Expand has always believed monitoring and control is a fundamental part of WAN Optimization. This has led us to enhance our existing QoS engine with improved Layer 7 visibility to enable greater control of the optimized WAN to ensure business critical, time sensitive applications are able to drive revenue unimpeded,” said Efi Gatmor, chief technical officer, Expand Networks

In order to remain secure, companies are deploying advanced firewalls enhancing the performance of WAN Optimization solutions. Expand’s FTM overcomes this challenge by providing clarity in operations and by being equipped with firewalls and intrusion detection systems. Expand’s FTM also gives users the ability to decide how to encrypt traffic across the WAN, while offering fully featured WAN Optimization across inspected networks.

“The Expand FTM can overcome firewalls ensuring Expand integrates as transparently as possible, enabling enterprises to achieve the benefits of WAN Optimization technology and deliver an end user experience by putting users in virtual proximity of application and datacenter services,” added Gatmor.
