100 Gbe and the Cloud

By Erin Monda, TMCnet Contributor

I recently interviewed Bill Dunmire, director of integrated marketing at Brocade (News - Alert), about the impact of 100 Gbe capabilities on the cloud communications industry.

Erin: How will 100 Gbe capabilities impact the industry?

Bill: The wire-speed 100 GbE scalability of the Brocade MLXe enables our Service Provider customers to cost effectively scale their networks to meet skyrocketing bandwidth demands. Additionally, the Terabit trunk capability of the MLXe enables them to manage multiple 100 GbE interfaces as a single managed connection, providing more than twice the operational efficiency of our competitors at a fraction of the cost.

The 100 GbE capabilities of the Brocade MLXe are delivered with full 100 Gigabit packet processors and traffic managers to ensure full performance and support for full 100 Gigabit data flows.  As traffic demands soar from the rapid rise of mobility and desire to access distributed, cloud-based compute and data stores -- much of which is video -- individual flows become larger and more persistent. Having this ability to economically scale without compromise is critical to the Service Provider’s business.

Erin: How can data center customers and service providers benefit from these changes?

Bill: Data Center customers will benefit from the MLXe’s breakthrough scalability and performance combined with continuous operation to enable next generation virtualized Data Centers to support rising application traffic demand and deliver Cloud-based services using less infrastructure, vastly improving operational efficiency and lowering costs. Erin: These 100 Gigabit Ethernet blades sound expensive – are they?

Bill: Brocade’s 100 GbE module at under $100K list price per port, resets the bar for 100 GbE affordability. The 32 100 GbE ports per Brocade MLXe system provides 4x the 100GbE scalability at 1/8th the cost of the competition, delivering compelling economics for our Service Provider customers.

Erin: How will Service Providers benefit from Brocade’s innovation in this changing market?

Bill: The massive 100 GbE scalability of Brocade’s new MLXe routers and breakthrough price point of Brocade’s innovative two port 100 GbE module enables Service Providers to support more customers and greater traffic volume at a lower cost per bit. The multiple full 100 Gigabit packet processors and traffic managers on the 100 GbE module ensure wire-speed performance even when supporting l advanced features such as IPv6 and MPLS, enabling Service Providers to also deliver consistently high customer service levels. Brocade MLXe routers also deliver the industry’s first Terabit/second trunks and coupled with NEBs certification further demonstrates Brocade’s commitment to providing unmatched simplicity, optimized applications, non-stop networking and investment protection to Service Providers.
