VeriSign Helps MuvEnum Increase Online Sales with Its Code Signing Certificates

VeriSign, a provider of Internet infrastructure services, has claimed that the VeriSign (News - Alert) Code Signing Certificates have helped Windows desktop software developer MuvEnum increase online sales by 21 percent.
According to VeriSign, the VeriSign Code Signing Certificates protect users' customers, brand and intellectual property by making their applications identifiable and harder to falsify or damage with a time-stamped digital signature certified by the most trusted security brand on the Internet.
MuvEnum had developed the MuvAudio application for converting audio files for same-quality playback on any device, and this software has been available to customers from 2005. But in 2007 users who tried to download the software for their 64-bit Microsoft (News - Alert) operating systems received intimidating warning messages such as 'lack of digital coding signing certificates and hence harmful to the computer' and because of that the company was losing revenue. A code signed digital certificate acts as 'virtual shrinkwrap' to assure the recipient of downloaded software of the authenticity of the publisher and that the software has not been tampered with in transit.
Though MuvEnum opted for signing certificates from another vendor, users were still receiving the same error prompts which only resulting in wastage of the company's valuable time and money. MuvEnum has stated that they didn't realize that most Certificate Authorities are not authorized to provide certificates for 64-bit Windows drivers.
Then by switching to VeriSign, a provider of Class 3, cross-signed certificates Microsoft requires for its 64-bit platform drivers, MuvEnum was able to rid itself of the taxing warning signals. Immediately afterwards the company has claimed that they saw an increase of 21.1 percent sales within the first month after VeriSign certificates were deployed.
John Rennemeyer, MuvEnum's owner has commented that the bottom line is that VeriSign is one of the very few CAs whose code signing certificates do the job for MuvEnum, or indeed for any publisher whose software contains drivers and who wants to tap the burgeoning 64-bit market. They checked out each of the authorized vendors, and VeriSign was the most reasonably priced.
Jay Schiavo, director of product management at VeriSign added that consumers who download software want to trust the source. That means software providers who fail to digitally sign their code run the risk of losing customers and revenues to the inevitable warning messages that appear when consumers download unsigned software. MuvEnum's experience shows how effective VeriSign Code Signing Certificates can be in turning revenue losses into increased sales.
