ARRIS has reportedly
announced that the ARRIS EGT VIPr2200 encoder can now compress four high definition channels into one QAM channel, increasing bandwidth efficiency without sacrificing video quality.
A fully programmable platform, VIPr allows performance improvements like 4:1 HD through simple software upgrades, eliminating the need for hardware changes. According to company officials, this means that less downtime for upgrades and longer product life cycles.
The VIPr2200’s Intelligent Recode feature -- full decode/re-encode within the original encoding parameters-- sophisticated pre-processing and filtering, and integrated closed-loop statistical multiplexing enable high quality rate reduction.
Company officials said that this lets operators multiplex up to four HD services that can fit into a 256 QAM channel without observable video quality degradation.
The VIPr's 4:1 HD compression ability also offers bandwidth management and conservation. Company officials said that the bandwidth can be dedicated toward other revenue-generating services, including on demand, high speed data and voice, and more HD channels.
Cable operators have been able to fit 2 HD services into one 256 QAM without “processing” those services, said company officials.

The company supplies broadband operators with the tools and platforms they need to deliver telephony, demand driven video, next-generation advertising, and high-speed data services.
ARRIS also
announced the unveiling of its new DOCSIS Control Interface for subscriber service provisioning and system management on Ethernet Passive Optical Network networks.
Earlier in July, ARRIS and VECTOR, a provider that specializes in supplying broadband solutions for European broadband operators,
announced the expansion of their collaboration with the addition of the ARRIS optical solutions to VECTOR’s portfolio.
