Laplink PCmover Provides Easier Upgrade from XP to Windows 7

The users upgrading to Windows 7 will now reportedly have support from PCmover from Laplink Software. The company said that the support will provide proper upgrade path to the newest operating system from Microsoft.

Windows 7 was been released to manufacturing on July 22. Microsoft (News - Alert) plans to make the OS available for general public on Oct. 22. The OS intends to be fully compatible with applications and hardware with which Windows Vista is already compatible. Windows 7 will also do away with some of the applications like Windows Calendar, Windows Mail, Windows Movie Maker, and Windows Photo Gallery.

Microsoft will not support a direct upgrade from Windows XP to Windows 7 and will not offer any upgrade options, not even from Vista in Europe. Outside of Europe, users should first upgrade from XP to Vista and then from Vista to Windows 7.

Laplink said that the company has a better solution which is simple and less time consuming. With the help of PCmover, any user can upgrade from Windows XP or Vista directly to Windows 7 with just a few simple steps is possible, the company said.

Users just need to install PCmover on the Windows XP or Vista computer to be upgraded, run PCmover and select the upgrade option, and install Windows 7, selecting the "do not reformat" option. To automatically restore all applications, files, and setting, the users just need to install and run PCmover.

“PCmover is the only program capable of automatically performing this task," said Thomas Koll, Laplink's CEO, in a statement. "Other products fall short. Disk imaging software cannot easily restore across different operating systems while file transfer programs can't handle applications. Without PCmover, users must copy all data files manually to an external drive, upgrade to Windows 7, and then reinstall all the applications, data and settings by hand.”

In May, the company announced that PCmover is now available in versions designed and priced for specific users, with a new consumer version edition priced as low as $29.95. Versions of PCmover designed for other users - including IT consultants and businesses - are priced even lower on a per license basis.
