As per the recent Global DDoS Attack Report, published by Prolexic in Q3 of 2013, reflection threats is emerging as one of the major menaces that is gripping the industry. According to the data from the global clients of Prolexic, the reflection attacks have seen a sharp increase of nearly 265 percent in the third-quarter of 2013 as against the same period in 2012. The attacks have recorded an alarming 70 percent growth over the second-quarter of 2013.
In a release, Stuart Scholly, President of Prolexic, said “Reflection attacks need to be on everyone’s radar. Our goal in developing this infographic was to simplify this somewhat complex subject matter and raise awareness of reflection attacks so IT and security communities can take proactive action.”
The fast-paced growth of reflection attacks further underlines the problem of misconfigured servers across the globe and how these servers are easily prone to attacks. Hackers do not have to try hard to breach the security walls of these servers to gain access to the list of IP addresses from shady internet communities. Further, DrDoS attacks also prevent tracing back to the source of attack providing an anonymity shield to the perpetrators and also provide a scope for engaging the broadband networks of unsuspecting victims to amplify the range of the attack.
The recently released infographic brings to the fore the modus operandi of the DrDOS attacks and describes the impact on such an attack on the intermediaries as well as the target websites. The infographic also explains the factors that are popularizing these types of attacks and lists out six industries that have been the target for reflection attacks on a large scale. Also included in the infographic are certain suggestions and measures that organizations can implement to minimize the risk of DrDOS attacks on their server.
