IBM Inks Contract with UPES Dehradun

Technology giant IBM (News - Alert) has recently revealed that it has signed a MoU with the University of Petroleum & Energy Studies or UPES, Dehradun, India. It will not only provide a boost to the school’s existing IT education, but it will also create a unique opportunity for students and faculty to hone their skills on IBM software products.

The objective of the partnership is to make both students and faculty familiar with the IBM technologies while pursuing their academic interests. In other words, to bridge and reduce the gap in technical expertise of the prospective future IT workforce.

Sometime during November of 2012, the IBM Academic Initiative (AI) established an IBM Software Center of Excellence (COE) on the UPES university campus at Dehradun. It was at this time that the country leader of the academic Initiative from IBM India, Malathi Srinivasan stated, “This partnership aims at bridging the academic-industry gap by training the faculty and students on cutting edge software tools and technologies. The ongoing series of faculty development programmes will ensure smoother knowledge transition to students.”

IBM forges relationships with universities and colleges to develop high quality curricula which will aid students in being more aware of the latest developments in the field of software engineering. Over the years, such partnerships with universities and colleges have helped in building a competitive and smarter IT workforce. This is mainly because IBM encourages the adoption of open standards technologies to promote high quality education.

Further, students involved in this initiative can also apply their learning experience to solve real world problems and by providing them with a first-hand experience in solving problems, they improve their chances significantly in the job market.

UPES offers both undergraduate and post graduate courses in specialized branches of engineering and delivers a world class curriculum as well.
