Optelian Completes Acquisition of Versawave

Optelian (News - Alert), a designer and manufacturer of optical transport systems, has successfully completed the acquisition of Versawave Technologies Inc.

Versawave is a player in the field of ultra-high bandwidth gallium arsenide based optical modulators with patented polarization modulation technology. It designs, develops and manufactures its products in Canada with semi-conductor chip fabrication provided by select vendors in North America

The acquisition of Versawave will help Optelian broaden its markets, extend its technical leadership and strengthen its client services through innovative product development in the field of optical communications, officials said.

Officials also said that the synergy with Optelian will also enable Versawave to expand manufacturing, accelerate the creation of new products and enhance customer support.

In a release, Optelian's CEO, David Weymouth, said, "Our acquisition of Versawave is very much a part of our core strategy of continuing to manufacture in North America and being as vertically integrated as possible to provide our customers with very cost effective solutions and short lead times."

According to a recent study from market research firm Infonetics Research (News - Alert), it has been found that operators have a strong preference for deploying 100 Gigabit-per-second technology as they upgrade their networks.

"Versawave brings exceptional technology for 100Gbps and will accelerate Optelian's growth into the next generation of highly integrated photonic systems," continued Weymouth.

It has been confirmed that Versawave, led by Hiroshi Kato, will continue to operate at its current Vancouver facility as a division of Optelian.

In related news, Optelian has announced that it has been named Outstanding Information and Communications Technology company by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Ottawa Section.
