Juniper Networks Joins Eclipse Foundation's Open Source Community

Juniper Networks, a provider of high-performance network infrastructure for services providers, enterprises and public sector organizations, has recently announced that the company has become a member of the Eclipse Foundation.

The Eclipse Foundation is a leading open source community which includes millions of users who are focused on building an open development platform and cultivating an open source community and the associated ecosystem of complementary products and services. Juniper Networks (News - Alert) aims to extend its Open Software Development and to bring shape to its Open Networking strategy by joining this community.

In a release, the vice president of Junos Space Business Unit, Juniper Networks, Mike Harding, said, "In joining the Eclipse Foundation, Juniper Networks can provide its customers and partners with a richer development environment for creating applications to optimize their network assets and create new revenue opportunities while reducing cost, complexity and time. Eclipse is an elite organization and this is a great opportunity to bring faster productivity to new Junos software solutions."

Juniper Network’s Junos software products will now power further open development capabilities of other software developers who are part of the Eclipse Foundation community. Members of the community using the Eclipse integrated development environment (IDE), can now add Junos and Junos Space Software Development Kits (SDKs) to the combination and create new Open Networking software with better insight into networks, as data is exposed through APIs for application development. Juniper will gain access to the previously unavailable data at the network level and make its current portfolio of products available to the developers.

The executive director, Eclipse, Mike Milinkovich, added that, "Juniper Networks understands that open development platforms are critical to networking software. We are excited to add Juniper to our growing roster of members. As a member of the Eclipse Foundation, Juniper will provide the tools and frameworks needed by the Eclipse ecosystem to build Junos-based solutions."

The Junos Space SDK provides RESTful, a Web services-based application programming interface (API), as well as wide range of tools to create, test, simulate and deploy network applications. The new partnership is mutually beneficial and facilitates building and extending relationships with Eclipse members to create synergy in the networking and open source space, and provide better tools and products to customers.

By combining the Junos Space SDK with Eclipse IDE, developers will gain access to rich network data to create intelligent solutions, without requiring additional software tools and interfaces. Also, developers can focus on solutions rather than the development of complex foundation interfaces.
