Symmetricom Unveils Chip Scale Atomic Clock (CSAC)

Symmetricom has announced the availability of the world’s smallest, lowest power atomic oscillator, named SA.45s Chip Scale Atomic Clock (CSAC).

Atomic oscillators (“atomic clocks”) employ the fundamental physical principles that define world time. When the atoms of certain elements (e.g., hydrogen, cesium, and rubidium are most commonly used) are excited to resonance, they emit radiation of a precise frequency.

“Our new SA.45s CSAC product brings ultra high-precision and low power consumption to a variety of portable and underwater exploration applications,” said Dan Scharre, executive vice president and general manager at Symmetricom (News - Alert). “These applications can’t rely on continuously receiving GPS signals, and until now, traditional quartz-based timing options have forced users to choose between size, accuracy, and power consumption, even while providing less-accurate timing.”

The CSAC product is available in standard and military temperature-range configurations, the company has announced. Offering significant benefits for portable applications, the SA.45s CSAC incorporates several technology breakthroughs. Offering time accuracy two orders of magnitude better than the higher-power quartz-based solutions it replaces, it is only 16cc in volume, weighs only 35 grams, and requires only 115mW of power. The early adopters have already validated advanced technology benefits of Symmetricom’s QUANTUM™ SA.45s Chip Scale Atomic Clock.

Recently, the company announced that three of its prime officials, Raillin Wirjo, senior product manager; Rajendra Datta, senior director of OEM marketing; and Joseph Neil, director of business development, will be addressing the participants of the Carrier Ethernet World APAC Congress taking place at the Excelsior Hotel in Hong Kong through Dec. 3.
