AppZero 4.6 Widens Windows and Linux Platform Support

The release of AppZero 4.6 has been announced by AppZero. Support of both Windows and Linux platforms will be widened with this release. Both server-side and client-side applications are decoupled by AppZero from the operating system (OS).

The Windows and Linux applications are then provisioned by AppZero almost instantaneously. The provisioning of service is across any network, on any physical or virtual server. The provisioning is also possible in the datacenter, hosted or in the cloud.

An application is encapsulated into a Virtual Application Appliance or VAA by AppZero. Except for an executing OS, all the parameters required for the running of the application are encapsulated into the VAA. The target machine’s OS is used by the VAA. Without installation, the application therefore executes upon delivery. One-hundred percent portable server applications are therefore generated. With zero OS footprint, the applications have near-native performance. There is also no cloud or machine lock-in.

In a press release, Greg O’Connor, CEO of AppZero, said, “Customers and partners virtualize applications for reasons that go beyond the straight cost-savings of server virtualization. They want to decrease complexity and gain application portability across cloud and datacenter environments.”

O’Connor added the goal for ISVs and for the enterprises they are selling into is rapid, simplified deployment. The company is therefore delivering simplified Windows application management and a solid Linux offering.

AppZero 4.6 is scheduled for release in December. This version will cover Windows Server which include XP, Windows 2003, Vista, Windows 2008, Windows 2008 R2, and Windows 7. The XP, Vista, and Windows 7 Window Desktops will also be covered. The Linux releases of 4.0, 5.4 and 5.5 will also have coverage by the latest version. For moving aged-out applications to current Solaris hardware, the platform coverage of Solaris 2.6, 2.7, 8, 9, and 10 will also be available.

In a statement, Bill Cullen, CTO of AppZero, said, “We know that our customers want to move applications across a wide set of the latest platforms, rapidly and easily. This release makes the flexibility that zero-install delivery and application execution brings to their operations and deployment schedules available to a much broadened set of applications. You can’t go wrong listening to your customers.”
