According to company officials at Voltaire (News - Alert), FCA is a software and hardware solution that hastens message passing interface (MPI) performance over x86 based clusters which can accelerate performance of high performance computing applications like reservoir modeling, fluid dynamics and crash analysis among others.
HP conducted a benchmark test that showed that Voltaire FCA software improved performance of ANSYS FLUENT between 14 and 30 percent and CD-Adapco Star-CD AClass by 10 percent. The 192 core benchmark environment consisted of 96 HP BL460 blade servers, Voltaire Grid Director 40 Gbps InfiniBand switches and Platform MPI.
Voltaire FCA software is capable of accelerating MPI collective operations by using Voltaire switches and their on-board processors to offload significant parts of group communication onto the switching fabric while Voltaire Unified Fabric Manager software controls an efficient, topology-based collective flow.
These products work in tandem to ensure that all bottlenecks are removed, at both the server and interconnect levels. The computational acceleration is achieved transparently without requiring changes to the application.
In a press release, Asaf Somekh (News - Alert), vice president of marketing for Voltaire, said, “Gaining a 10 to 30 percent improvement in application performance is very significant and can mean substantial gains in competitive advantage for a business. The integration of Voltaire FCA software and Platform MPI enables a broader range of HPC customers to leverage these new performance advancements.”

It is critical for the computing industry and is considered a standard for developing scalable, parallel applications. Also Platform MPI supports a wide range of industry standard platforms, interconnects and operating systems ensuring that parallel applications can run anywhere.
