Voltaire Debuts its Fabric Collective Accelerator for Platform MPI Environments

Voltaire Ltd., a provider of scale-out data center fabrics, announced the availability of its Fabric Collective Accelerator (FCA) solution for environments using Platform MPI.

According to company officials at Voltaire (News - Alert), FCA is a software and hardware solution that hastens message passing interface (MPI) performance over x86 based clusters which can accelerate performance of high performance computing applications like reservoir modeling, fluid dynamics and crash analysis among others.

HP conducted a benchmark test that showed that Voltaire FCA software improved performance of ANSYS FLUENT between 14 and 30 percent and CD-Adapco Star-CD AClass by 10 percent.  The 192 core benchmark environment consisted of 96 HP BL460 blade servers, Voltaire Grid Director 40 Gbps InfiniBand switches and Platform MPI.

Voltaire FCA software is capable of accelerating MPI collective operations by using Voltaire switches and their on-board processors to offload significant parts of group communication onto the switching fabric while Voltaire Unified Fabric Manager software controls an efficient, topology-based collective flow.

These products work in tandem to ensure that all bottlenecks are removed, at both the server and interconnect levels. The computational acceleration is achieved transparently without requiring changes to the application.

In a press release, Asaf Somekh (News - Alert), vice president of marketing for Voltaire, said, “Gaining a 10 to 30 percent improvement in application performance is very significant and can mean substantial gains in competitive advantage for a business. The integration of Voltaire FCA software and Platform MPI enables a broader range of HPC customers to leverage these new performance advancements.”

Platform MPI is a production–quality implementation of the Message Passing Interface or MPI. It is critical for the computing industry and is considered a standard for developing scalable, parallel applications. Also Platform MPI supports a wide range of industry standard platforms, interconnects and operating systems ensuring that parallel applications can run anywhere.

Tripp Purvis, vice president of business development for platform computing, said, “Scaling parallel application performance over large HPC clusters is a known challenge due to the inherent limitations of parallel communication. The combination of Platform MPI and Voltaire FCA enables a quantum leap in MPI-and HPC- application performance over x86-based clusters.”

Voltaire provides scale-out computing fabrics for data centers, high performance computing and cloud environments. It offers server and storage fabric switches and advanced management software that can improve performance of mission-critical applications via infrastructure consolidation and lower power consumption. Voltaire products are incorporated in server and blade offerings from Bull, Fujitsu, HP, IBM, NEC (News - Alert) and SGI.
