Network Management Capabilities Enhanced by True Ethernet Fabric Switching

November 16, 2010

Brocade (News - Alert) Communications Systems, Inc. announced the introduction of a true Ethernet fabric switching solution that is suitably built for highly virtualized and cloud-optimized data centers.

According to company sources Brocade specializes in data center fabric innovation and deployment besides in the development and delivery of Ethernet fabrics.

The Brocade VDX 6720 Data Center Switches comprise a new family of 10 Gigabit Ethernet or GbE offerings that are most suitable for Layer 2 Ethernet networking to create true Ethernet fabrics. The switches are capable of eliminating the need for Spanning Tree Protocol or STP besides collapsing the access and aggregation networking layers for the creation of a flat, multipath, deterministic network suited for virtualized environments.

Also this method provides virtual machines (VMs) a greater sphere of mobility, increases network utilization, creates more resilient networks and simplifies network management.

In a release Parag Patel, Vice President, Global Strategic Alliances, VMware said, “Today more and more customers are moving toward virtualized cloud infrastructures to significantly reduce IT cost and complexity, increase efficiency and improve agility.”

“Brocade’s new VCS technology and the innovative VDX product line present customers with a tremendous opportunity to simplify, scale and easily manage their virtualized data center network, offering a next step for customers implementing the IT-as-a-Service model,” Patel added.

The Brocade VDX 6720 switches deliver Brocade VCS technology, which includes virtual cluster switching capabilities, transforms data center networks through innovations for ensuring virtualization and cloud environments. Brocade VCS technology helps build true Ethernet fabrics which feature multipathing and resiliency.

Company officials added that it also provides a fully distributed control plane so that every switch is aware of the entire network topology. The VM network characteristics and configuration automatically migrate with the VM by using Automatic Migration of Port Profiles (AMPP) technology. It simplifies configuration and network management by treating the cluster as a single logical switch thereby reducing operating costs.

Dave Stevens (News - Alert), Brocade CTO explained that the Brocade One unified network strategy and vision will simplify networks and increase scalability. The Brocade VDX 6720 switches, featuring Brocade VCS technology, deliver true cloud-optimized networking, he noted.
