Server Technology (News - Alert) has some exciting news to share with the industry this week; its latest intelligent CDU has capacity enough to easily power up to 25 domestic homes in the United States.
Recently, Server Technology – a data center power monitoring technology provider – unveiled its new 415V 60A product with 43.2kW (34.5kW derated) of power. The product is being touted as the highest capacity CDU Server Technology has ever built, as it takes Server Technology to a higher level of power distribution.
“If you can get higher efficiency and more power to your rack then it only makes sense; it’s like getting a car with better gas mileage,” Steve Hammond, a product manager for Server Technology, told TMCnet of the latest product.
For almost three decades, Server Technology has been providing some of the largest companies around the world with data center power management solutions. While traditionally, the company has marketed 415V products at 20A and 30A domestically, this product goes to 60A. This product is able to deliver a lot more power to the cabinet –double what a 30A unit would deliver.
Server Technology’s latest 415V 60A product with 43.2kW of power is being supplied to large providers of modular, containerized data centers who are choosing taller racks and packing more and more servers into these racks. Accordingly, these companies need more power for all these servers.
“Traditionally here in the United States we see mostly 208V products. As customers go to these pod systems or they build new greenfield data centers we are seeing a shift to 415V,” Hammond said. “What this is really all about is when they take in power from the power company, they have to transform it. They bring it from 480V to 415V to 208V and even down to 120V, which is what you find in the wall sockets, and every time they transform they lose efficiencies. Furthermore, with new projects there are savings in cable costs over 208V since smaller gauge wire can be used to deliver 415V power.”
“Customers have figured out that if they can just bring 415V to the rack, they don’t have to transform it down and they get higher efficiencies,” he added. “That’s what’s important to us – that we have high power products that are also in the 415V market because we think that’s where things are headed.”
When asked what makes this new product so exciting, Hammond said it’s the fact that it pushes the limits for Server Technology.
“Whenever you go to higher power there’s a lot of things you need to be concerned about: how do you handle heat generated by the high power, how do you distribute power across the outlets, how do you make power measurements internally to the unit,” Hammond said.
“I think for pod businesses as well as new data centers, will see a lot more growing demand for this type of product,” he added.
