Online Tech Tests Business Case for Private Cloud Computing
By Kunal Vahalia, TMCnet Contributor
Online Tech, which until recently made use of server virtualization technologies, decided to move its entire IT infrastructure to cloud computing. The advantages of cloud computing are many, the foremost of them being supporting all IT systems of the company in a mere one tenth of the space used by physical servers.
The other benefits include zero downtime and very low software and hardware maintenance costs. It will also lead to faster product development and a strong disaster recovery program. In a press release, Mike Klein, president of Online Tech, “The company is thrilled by the savings on resources because of decreased server costs to support the company’s entire IT infrastructure. The physical servers have reduced from 24 to just 2. The benefits from implementing cloud computing technologies are myriad and it has convinced the company that it can help other companies in the same way as it has helped us.”
Online Tech implemented a cloud computing solution that is capable of passing the SAS (News - Alert) 70 audit procedures. The company has started using Dell EqualLogic SANs and VMWare’s virtualization technologies to standardize the cloud computing architecture with dedicated servers, storage and network infrastructure.
The result is the emergence of a private cloud that is capable of meeting HIPAA, SOX and PCI (News - Alert) requirements. Klein continued, “Moving to the new technology will help our support team to manage the company infrastructure in a better way without having to make any new changes in between and minimum risks of downtime. This surely is an IT manager’s dream.”
Apart from reducing downtime, cloud computing has also increased the pace of product development. Said Farooq Ahmed, Systems Architect, Online Tech, “We can now configure a new server within minutes and add resources easily. Majority of the hardware obstacles are now removed and there is accurate bandwidth monitoring.”
Online Tech helps its clients dramatically reduce IT data center costs, operational risks and downtime.
