Application Hosting: Joyent Debuts Cloud Solutions for Game Studios to Develop Online Games

By Shamila Janakiraman, TMCnet Contributor

Joyent, a provider of application hosting solutions and technologies announced the availability of a suite of three cloud solutions that can be used by game studios to develop online games on platforms like Facebook, Yahoo!, iPhone (News - Alert) and iPad.

According to company sources the game solutions are a progressive suite that encompasses the full development lifecycle from production, through testing, to publishing. It includes Production Solution which gets developers up and running on a virtual machine, called a SmartMachine. It offers them tools that are required to develop their game from concept to prototype.

Also a Testing Solution is present which helps developers ensure their art, audio and levels of play can withstand the rigors of a massively multiplayer online (MMO) play. The Publishing Solution supports the public launch and ongoing operation of real-time games with built-in high availability.

In a press release David Young (News - Alert), CEO of Joyent said, “We support the developer from game concept to launch, then through rapid growth and ongoing success. Joyent provides a holistic solution, allowing developers to focus on creation of the next massively popular game rather than on infrastructure, performance and scalability.”

Kabam the creator of the leading strategy game on Facebook (News - Alert), Kingdoms of Camelot, and Oceanside Interactive the creator of iPhone game My DinosGo! Leverage Joyent solutions to deploy their games. Kabam is now using the flexible development platform which allows it to scale easily.

Michael Li, CTO-Asia of Kabam said, “We chose to work with Joyent because we were confident that we’d be able to scale as our traffic increased.”

Li explained that by using Joyent solutions, Kabam can build a development environment that is much bigger instead of buying and maintaining many servers which will be expensive.

“And when we’re through, we just shrink the dev environment. Joyent supported our development through our planning and deployment stages. We are now serving millions of users per month,” Li added.

Joyent enables developers to build, test, launch and deliver production applications and games. It offers excellent incentives and delivers premium infrastructure services through an ecosystem of partners including Codesion for version control hosting, New Relic for application performance management and tmpSocial for virtual currency solutions.

The company’s partnerships with Basho and Zeus offer developers virtual machines pre-loaded with leading NoSQL and load balancing solutions. Also game studios will be able to access the Joyent suite of solutions directly through its ultra-scale data center, the Switch SuperNAP in Las Vegas.

Interested users can join Joyent in a webinar entitled, “You’ve Got Game: Planning for the Successful Scale and Performance of Your Game in the Cloud” on Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011. Joyent will show how to plan for unpredictable traffic patterns, growth and success and its customers will discuss their experiences on getting up and running in the cloud.
