Joyent Gives Tips on Improving Performance and Scaling in Cloud Computing

By Vinti Vaid, TMCnet Contributor

Poor application performance causes companies to lose customers, according to Joyent, a provider of cloud computing infrastructure and sophisticated cloud hosting technology.

The company notes that poor application performance eventually reduces employee productivity and negatively impacts bottom line revenue. Joyent’s whitepaper titled “Performance and Scale in Cloud Computing,” emphasizes that organizations should ensure that application performance is optimized when written for deployment on the cloud or moved from a data center to a cloud computing infrastructure.

Enterprises have an option of testing the applications in cloud and non-cloud environments for base-level performance comparisons. This whitepaper describes how aspects of an application, such as disk I/O and RAM (News - Alert) access, may cause intermittent spikes in performance.

Joyent says that similar to traditional software architectures, overall traffic patterns and peaks in system use account for the majority of performance issues in cloud computing. Although several performance issues can be solved by capacity planning and expansion based on multiples of past acceptable performance, planning does not always cover sudden spikes in traffic.

Enterprises often have to use manual provisioning under these circumstances. More options are available to achieve greater scalability and performance in a cost effective manner. Customers can use more efficient application development and this approach breaks code execution into silos serviced by more easily scaled and provisioned resources.

Joyent understand all these issues and is offering its Smart Technologies for organizations that require greater performance and scalability in cloud computing environments. The solution offers scalability features and options that help application performance.

Businesses can leverage the Joyent SmartPlatform development environment to develop more efficient applications that are easily ported to virtually any open standards environment.

This whitepaper describes in detail how applications can benefit from both horizontal and vertical scaling of resources on demand, yet truly dynamic scaling is not possible on most cloud computing infrastructures. Joyent says that one of the most common and expensive response to scale issues by vendors is to over-provision customer installations to accommodate a wide range of performance issues.

The readers of this whitepaper will know practical means to address application scalability and to cut performance bottlenecks Scalability is the best solution to increasing and maintaining application performance in cloud computing environments and read this whitepaper now to know how to go about it.
