Cisco's 'Borderless Networks' Era Makes Grand Entrance with New Router

So many high-bandwidth applications are getting revved up to hit wireless and wireline networks that without the right backup technology, IT personnel worldwide will experience a cacophonous overload.

To prep for the new era, networking/routing giant Cisco (News - Alert) wants to be one of the big players ahead of the game.

Today the San Jose, Calif.-based company unveiled its “Borderless Network” architecture and a five-phase plan designed to help deliver services and applications to anyone, anywhere on any device. And to do it “reliably, securely and seamlessly,” Joel Conover, senior marketing manager of borderless networks for Cisco, told TMCnet. As the first proof point of this architecture, Cisco has launched the second generation of its Integrated Services Router: ISR G2 (News - Alert).

“We’re at the tip of an explosion of things, and it has to do with [the growth of] video,” Conover told TMCnet. “Cisco’s new borderless networks architecture allows IT to more clearly connect anyone anywhere.”

The Cisco ISR G2 helps businesses and service providers scale the delivery of on-demand, network-related services such as video and collaborative applications at branch offices.

Cisco’s latest offering comes as business video is starting to take off. According to Cisco VNI Research, business video adoption is expected to climb to 77.6 percent by 2012. The new ISR reportedly offers five times the performance of its predecessor while maintaining similar price points.

And just in time, too. IT departments of the future are going to have to deal with a greater influx of smartphone-toting workers that threaten to overwhelm existing networks.

“Business in the future will work from any devices on any network and pull applications from multiple places – inside the enterprise perimeter or the cloud,” Conover said. “Cisco’s router can automatically tailor the delivery of content and applications you need as fast as you need it.”
