DataCore Software specializing in storage virtualization, business continuity and disaster recovery software solutions published a white paper on Disaster Recovery which highlights the advantages of combining DataCore’s storage virtualization with
Riverbed’s WAN optimization solutions.
This combination was instrumental in increasing the efficiency of organizations in throughput and data transfers for remote sites. Working with Waterstons, Riverbed (

Alert) and DataCore showed that organizations can deal with bottlenecks in line capacity to remote and Disaster Recovery (DR) sites without the need for high-speed and high-cost lines. Virtual volume traffic from DR sites lead to line capacity overload.
Waterstons provides consulting, technology and outsourcing services to organizations. It found that when organizations were trying to consolidate from physical to virtual servers, inert-site traffic between the DR site and primary site grew in volume resulting in the updates from virtual machines to exceed the line’s transmission capabilities.
This resulted in data loss in DR sites. To avoid this there was a need to upgrade to higher speeds and higher capacity lines which will require more infrastructure changes and other expenses.
Alternatively remote replication can be attempted within DataCore’s SANmelody with compressing, caching and optimization by Riverbed Steelhead network appliances. The built-in remote replication function in DataCore SANmelody software was used to relay changes in virtual disk blocks from the primary site to the DR site over an existing 2Mbps IP WAN.
Riverbed Steelhead network appliances were inserted on both sides of the link to compress, cache and optimize inter-site transmissions inline. These solutions served better in disaster recovery and were cost-effective when compared to upgrading to a higher bandwidth service.
Live test analysis of the new solution undertaken by Waterstons found that the combined solution can reduce the time to remotely replicate three new VMs from 42 hours to 3 hours. This improves a customers’ achievable Recovery Time Objective significantly. The salvage company will be able to recover 2 days worth of data which may have got lost in an un-optimized configuration.
DataCore’s remote replication software enables customers to make snapshots of the remotely replicated volumes to the ESX hosts at the DR site. This speeds up the recovery without having to make back ups and restores.
DataCore’s portable storage server software simplifies and automates capacity expansion and centralizes storage management for Windows, UNIX, Linux, MacOS and NetWare operating systems.
