Cleaning up Internet Traffic Jams with WAN Optimization

Just as traffic jams are bad for commuters, enterprise Internet traffic jams are bad for business users.

At least this is the thought process of Aryaka (News - Alert), the world’s first cloud-based WAN optimization company solving application and network performance issues faced by the distributed enterprise. Founded in 2008, Aryaka touts itself on offering its own WAN optimization cloud and the company encourages enterprises to connect using the public Internet to Aryaka’s nearest point of presence,

“We have a beautifully paved highway that has redundant networks,” Sonal Puri, vice president of marketing and sales for Aryaka, told TMCnet at Cloud Expo last week in Santa Clara, Calif. “We are taking traditional models of appliances and converting it into a cloud-based solution so it’s affordable for companies of all sizes and all geographies.”

This philosophy has resulted in Aryaka being recognized as a Gartner “Cool Vendor” in Enterprise Communications (News - Alert) and Network Services in 2011 for its disruptive SaaS model and named on the GigaOm Structure 50 list for companies that will shape the future of cloud computing.

In fact, enterprises seem to be rapidly catching on to Aryaka’s value proposition, as the company reported at Cloud Expo that global enterprises all over are increasingly leveraging Aryaka’s cloud-based WAN optimization and application acceleration solution. Those enterprises include Symphony Services, a leader in software and product engineering services; and Tavant, a Service Oriented Architecture (SOA) solutions and providing end-to-end services provider.

Some of the main benefits of the solution are that it promises increased productivity, improved time to market for new products, and met deadlines. Moreover, Aryaka provides enterprises LAN-like performance for WAN applications by improving throughput 42x and reducing data 99 percent.

While Aryaka has been widely adopted around the world, its sweet spot remains the mid-market which has a “crying need for WAN optimization,” Jay Mejia, director of public relations for Aryaka, told TMCnet.

Echoed Puri, “The entire market is just five percent provided for. You are looking at this huge market opportunity for us and this underserved market where people have the need.”

“For SMBs they can’t afford to fail,” she added. “They can’t put a lot of resource into a solution to see it not work; they are also growing the fastest… Our solution is not one of these things that is nice to have; it’s becoming I have to have it.”

According to Puri, with Aryaka, SMBs pay a couple of thousand dollars a month and are able to receive all the functionality as a service. For example, in just 20 minutes, the Aryaka team can check in all of the SMBs codes while still promising to avoid Internet jams.

“The midmarket loves us because they are finding that they have to start adopting some of the newer pieces of technology because they can’t have IT in ever place,” Puri said. “You need to start testing the cloud and you have to have the flexibility to grow.”

“We make it easy for them to come on board,” she added, noting that they can try it free for a week.

In addition to spreading the word about its offerings, while at Cloud Expo, Puri and fellow Aryaka executive Ashwath Nagaraj also led a presentation in the "Moving to the Cloud in Practice" track titled "Architecting the New Global Business Cloud." In the session, Nagaraj and Puri addressed effective networking strategies to optimize data delivery and application acceleration over an optimized WAN via the cloud.
