Growth Predicted for Lower-Cost Radiation Detection Materials

The future is bright for higher-performance and lower- cost radiation detection materials, according to a new report by analyst firm NanoMarkets.

The report on the radiation detection materials market indicates that although the overall market for radiation detection is will only experience modest growth, these two markets will grow due to demand from domestic security and medical imaging markets.

The domestic security and medical imaging markets are using radiation detectors and require higher sensitivities and mobile detection systems. These requirements, according to NanoMarkets can be addressed by detectors based on new materials.

NanoMarkets tracks and analyzes emerging market opportunities created by developments in advanced materials.

In its new report the company shows that scintillation-based radiation detectors hold over 70 percent of the radiation detector market and users are leverage these systems to provide better light output and linearity as well as energy resolution.

Based on the findings, NanoMarkets predicts strong demand for detectors based on novel materials such as oxides, simple salts, silicates and plastics.

The report also shows that semiconductor detectors market needs new materials that are less expensive because materials for semiconductor detectors can cost ten times those for scintillation detectors.

NanoMarkets report quantifies the market for scintillation, thin-film, and semiconductor detection materials used for domestic security, military, medical imaging, nuclear power, science and geophysical applications.

The report contains eight-year forecasts of the radiation detection materials market and also discusses the activities and strategies of leading firms active in this space.
