CoreSite Achieves 'Six 9' Availability for Five Years Running

CoreSite (News - Alert), a provider of secure, reliable, high-performance cloud-enabled data center solutions across the U.S., just announced it has achieved the “Six 9s” or 99.9999 percent availability for the fifth consecutive year.

In the tech world, availability means organizations can access the resources they need at all times. And while 100 percent availability sounds great, there are just too many variables in the world of electric power, server failure, network failure and plain old, it just stopped working to make that claim without some caveats. Even though the redundant systems that are in place can restore services quickly, the seconds it takes add up to minutes throughout the year, resulting in 99.9999 percent availability, which is exceptional.

The company said it has exceeded the 99.9999 percent uptime across its platform of data center facilities with unscheduled downtime of less than 32 seconds for the entire year. This comes against what CoreSite offers with its 100 percent uptime service level agreement.

Compared to other six 9 availability, the CoreSite guarantee comes in almost 10 times better than the five minutes plus industry standard for the year. And while five minutes might seem a miniscule amount for an entire year, it is important to remember the competitive environment in which businesses with a digital presence operate in.

If you think seconds don’t amount to much, Kissmetric said, “If an e-commerce site is making $100,000 per day, a 1 second page delay could potentially cost you $2.5 million in lost sales every year.” And for companies that operate with high levels of availability and reliability, each second is extremely valuable.

“We are once again pleased that our focus on operational excellence and the professionalism of our Field Operations organization has resulted in our achievement of six 9s uptime across our national platform of highly connected, cloud-enabled, enterprise-class data centers,” said Tom Ray (News - Alert), CEO at CoreSite.

CoreSite said it is able to achieve these numbers with on-site professionals that pass extensive examinations so they can be accountable. In addition to the talent of its workforce, the company also meets the regulatory compliances of PCI (News - Alert), DSS, and SSAE 16 SOC 1 and SOC 2 Type 2, along with International Organization for Standardization certification (ISO 27001) for its professionals, infrastructure and systems.

The company has 17 centers in eight locations across the US on more than 2.8 million square feet of data center space, with two additional data centers under construction. It counts as its clients more than 900 of the world’s leading enterprises, network operators, cloud providers, and supporting service providers.
