Trend Micro to Buy HP TippingPoint in $300 Million Deal

Security software powerhouse Trend Micro (News - Alert) International is expanding its range of offerings and eliminating a key competitor with the acquisition of HP TippingPoint. The company announced a definitive agreement to purchase the HP company, which specializes in next-gen intrusion prevention systems (NGIPS) and network security, for $300 million.

The purchase covers security technology, intellectual property, expertise and a giant base of enterprise customers. Trend Micro is aiming to become a key enterprise security provider for dynamic defense solutions with the acquisition, spanning the network, endpoints, data center and the cloud.

"Organizations need a layered threat defense working seamlessly across the enterprise to address threats before, during and after an attack," said Eva Chen, CEO, Trend Micro. "As an ideal complement to our market-leading protection for data centers and endpoints, this new next-generation network defense solution combines our best-in-class network breach detection system with proven intrusion prevention and response capabilities from TippingPoint.”

Trend Micro plans to fold in its current capabilities with TippingPoint to create a Network Defense business unit slated to serve more than 3,500 enterprise customers. The unit will offer a multi-faceted approach to intrusion prevention and breach detection, mitigating exploits within the network before they cause additional damage.

The acquisition builds on HP and Trend Micro’s existing partnership, and the companies plan to continue working together once the purchase is complete. Initial plans include an expanded strategy focused on resale, managed services and OEM activities. The two companies will also emphasize security intelligence along with app and data security.

"This acquisition complements Trend Micro's current threat defense expertise, extending its strength in endpoint, cloud, data center and breach detection to the network," said Mike Spanbauer, vice president of research, NSS Labs, a security insight company. "By combining two strong brands, this move accelerates Trend Micro's enterprise position into a non-competing segment, and provides a single, complete threat defense solution for enterprises seeking to make a critical security investment."
