Dell, HP, Intel, Lenovo and Microsoft Launch Campaign to Boost PCs

Dell, HP, Intel (News - Alert), Lenovo and Microsoft are launching a marketing campaign to highlight why PCs are still relevant.

As reported on recode.net, these industry giants will come together under one slogan, “PC Does What?” in a webcast that will have top marketing executives from the respective companies addressing the public.

The PC market as a whole is on a decline, though it peaked in the second of quarter of 2015. According to Gartner, shipments fell to 68.4 million units, down 9.5 percent year on year. But IDC (News - Alert) has it a little more than a couple of percentages higher with an 11.8 percent drop, year on year, to 66.1 million shipments during the quarter.

While the industry is going through a rough spell because of mobile technology, the same cannot be said about Apple (News - Alert). During the same period in which the PC market saw 10-12 percent declines, Apple’s year over year growth in its personal computer shipments saw an impressive 16.1 percent increase.

According to sources quoted by recode, this will be an all-out blitz with TV, print and online advertisements. The alliance between these companies also sheds light on the current state of the market as well as future forecasts, because this is a first.

The future is also not looking that bright for PC sales, as IDC forecasts the market will continue to shrink by more than eight percent. However, there is a hopeful prospect amidst all the bad news.

Jay Chou, Senior Research Analyst, Worldwide PC Tracker, said, “Although the shortcomings of the PC business are obvious, a silver lining is that the industry has continued to refine the more mobile aspects of personal computers – contributing to higher growth in Convertible & Ultraslim Notebooks. The de-emphasis of touch on Windows 10 also paves the way for a more familiar experience and continuing unit growth on large-screen systems, particularly All-in-One PCs.”

This and other development has IDC optimistic, as it forecast a modest recovery in 2017.

The “PC Does What?” campaign will run in the U.S. and China to increase awareness of the capabilities of today’s modern PC.
