Comings & Goings: Carbonite Names New CEO

The online backup firm known as Carbonite announced late last week that it has a new CEO. Mohamad Ali is taking over effective immediately, succeeding former CEO David Friend. Friend is not leaving the Boston-based company completely as he will remain the executive chairman of the board of directors. He will also serve in an advisory role with the firm on a number of strategic endeavors Carbonite feels are important to its future.

"Carbonite has built a powerful offering," Ali said in a recent statement. "We're poised to capitalize on opportunities to provide cloud and hybrid business continuity solutions all over the world."

Ali is certainly no novice to this kind of a technological marketplace. Before coming over to Carbonite, he was a top executive for Hewlett-Packard and served directly under that firm’s CEO, Meg Whitman. At HP he was the chief strategy officer. Before he rose to prominence with HP he also was in charge of a number of other high tech firms, including the workforce optimization division of Aspect Software and he led Avaya’s (News - Alert) $2 billion global services division.

Before being one of the most respected high level leaders in the tech sector, he served for a number of years in different positions for IBM. While contract details were not officially announced, a regulatory filing with the SEC (News - Alert) found that Ali will be making an annual base salary of $375,000. The exec also got a $500,000 signing bonus and is allowed to purchase 250,000 of Carbonite’s common stock at a lower price of $14.44.

Carbonite itself might be on the move in a sort of way. The company announced last Wednesday that J2 Global is looking to buy the firm. When that potential purchase was announced, stock prices for Carbonite rose sharply.
