Organizations are looking for an easier and more efficient way to access content and data from centralized servers remotely—without having to worry about the applications and the security of the data. While many enterprises and SMBs have opted to migrate to the cloud to make this possible, the issue of security still persists.
An alternative that is rapidly gaining acceptance is VDI or virtual desktop infrastructure, which is a process of running a user desktop in a virtual machine living on a server in the datacenter. Not only does it deliver powerful desktop virtualization that enables fully personalized desktops for each user, but it also provides secure and simplified centralized management. Overland Storage (News - Alert) has announced the launch of a virtual desktop appliance which was developed in partnership with Shpere3D to address the growing virtualization and cloud markets.
Overland Storage provides global unified data management and protection solutions across the data lifecycle, and with this partnership it will be able to leverage its technology with the launch of the V3 hyper-converged virtual desktop appliance. This will expand the company’s portfolio of products with a virtual desktop solution that can be deployed easily with simplified management tools and lower total cost of ownership.
With this platform Overland is going to address the challenges of the management, complexity and performance weaknesses of physical desktops and traditional VDI across different environments. As a single turn-key appliance solution it delivers high-availability failover architecture, eliminates performance bottlenecks and installation problems. The V3 appliance offers ease and flexibility of deployment, breakthrough operational simplicity, predictable and consistent performance, secure desktop computing and scalability.
The appliance is available in two models delivered pre-provisioned and ready to quickly and easily install into an existing VMware environment in less than a day. Each model can manage 100 or 200 desktops per appliance with options to easily scale to 10,000 desktops. According to the company, based on a 1,000 user physical desktop environment organizations can lower the total cost of ownership (TCO) by $1 million over three years.
"Today's requirements in mobility and cloud computing are driving a new set of challenges and complexities for global IT organizations. By combining our enterprise-class scalable storage portfolio with the new turn-key V3 Appliance and breakthrough Desktop Cloud Orchestrator software, our global channel partners can now deliver virtual desktop solutions that overcome the cost and complexity of traditional VDI solutions," said Eric Kelly, president and CEO of the company.
