Imagination in Pact with Green Hills Software to Enable Compiler and Tools Support to MIPS CPUs

Imagination Technologies (News - Alert), a silicon Intellectual Property (IP) solutions provider, has signed a multi-year agreement with Green Hills Software, a provider of embedded development solutions, to bring broad compiler and tools support to MIPS CPU cores and architectures.

Green Hills has a long history of support for MIPS, and the company sees growing demand for these solutions.

The partnership enables MIPS CPU support from Green Hills Software for C/C++ compiler, assembler and linker, binary toolchain, MULTI integrated development environment (IDE), Green Hills Probe, SuperTrace   Probe and documentation.

The combined expertise of both companies in security, multi-threaded and multicore CPUs, and heterogeneous computing will deliver tremendous value to joint customers, Mike Haden, general manager, Advanced Products, Green Hills Software, said.

Under this partnership Green Hills Software will bring its popular embedded development solutions to MIPS Aptiv cores as well as the new MIPS Warrior family of cores. Additionally Green Hills Software is upgrading the capability to deliver fully optimized support for the microMIPS code compression instruction set architecture (ISA) and the latest MIPS r5 architecture, the company said.

“Green Hills is a great strategic partner for Imagination, and this new agreement reflects growing demand across several key markets,” said Tony King-Smith (News - Alert), EVP marketing, Imagination, in a statement. “We look forward to working together to help drive the future of mobile and embedded software engineering, and the future of heterogeneous processing."

The Microchip PIC32 portfolio of 32-bit microcontrollers utilizes the MIPS microAptiv core.

The partnership is also beneficial to Microchip Technology (News - Alert) because it will enable that company’s customers to develop innovative and cost-effective solutions, according to company officials.

Recently Imagination Technologies announced that its Ensigma radio communications processing (RPU) IP is integrated in the Qualcomm (News - Alert) Snapdragon 802 Ultra HD processor designed for smart TVs, set-top-boxes and digital media adapters.

The Ensigma RPU from Imagination Technologies performs global broadcast TV demodulation functions in the Qualcomm Snapdragon 802 processor that integrates Qualcomm Technologies’ own in-house designed Adreno GPU, CPU, video core, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technologies, Imagination Technologies said.
